Power Rankings: Week 9

Carlos Verde, Communications Manager

  1. Carleton Place Canadians (20-2-1) | LW: 1 (–) | Results: 6-2W v NAV, 4-1W @ NEP | Make it 11 in a row for Jason Clarke’s men, who now face a trip to No. 2 this week. Will their dominance continue?
  2. Ottawa Jr. Senators (17-3-2) | LW: 2 (–) | Results: 5-4W v ROC, 5-0W @ COR, 5-0W v SF | Outscoring your opponents 15-4 over the course of a week is undoubtedly impressive, but with first-place Ottawa and third-place Hawkesbury on the slate this week, will OJS maintain its good form against better opposition?
  3. Hawkesbury Hawks (12-6-0) | LW: 3 (–) | Results: 4-2W @ KEM, 6-0W v ROC, 5-3L @ PEM | The itinerant Hawks continue to pick up points, and goaltender Matt Petizian has two shutouts in his last three starts. Rick Dorval’s group is now 9-4 in the 13 games since their arena was closed midseason — an incredible mark for a travelling team.
  4. Pembroke Lumber Kings (12-8-0) | LW: 8 (+4) | Results: 4-2W v NEP, 5-3W v HAW | Dale McTavish’s club picked up a pair of much-needed home wins, and has now allowed just seven goals in its last three games — a noted improvement defensively. Brendan Browne’s five-point weekend helped.
  5. Brockville Braves (12-11-0) | LW: 4 (-1) | Results: 3-2L @ KAN, 5-3W v KAN, 5-4L @ KEM | The Braves’ inconsistency continued this week, as Brockville dropped two of three against bottom-half competition. Backup Nick Wiencek (.823, 4.63) struggled on Sunday in Kemptville. Tyson Kirkby has three points in as many games since being dealt to the Braves.
  6. Rockland Nationals (11-8-2) | LW: 5 (-1) | Results: 5-4L @ OJS, 6-0L @ HAW, 2-1L @ NAV | It was not a good week for Dan Sauve’s Nats, who crashed back to Earth with a narrow loss at Ottawa, a blowout loss in their own barn against the migrant Hawks and an impotent 2-1 defeat to the struggling Grads. That’s four losses in a row for the team that began the year 9-4-2.
  7. Kanata Lasers (9-10-3) | LW: 9 (+2) | Results: 3-2W v BRO, 5-3L @ BRO | Another middle-of-the-pack team, the Kanata Lasers split with the Braves and appear headed for a 6th-8th finish. Jack Quinn hasn’t scored in his last four games after potting nine in his first nine games — cause for concern.
  8. Cornwall Colts (10-10-2) | LW: 6 (-2) | Results:  4-2W @ NEP, 5-0L v OJS | So, uh, Chris Theodore’s out 4-6 months. Chris Theodore was also responsible for 25 per cent of Cornwall’s mediocre offensive output to this point. The Colts were also played off the rink by Ottawa. Will anybody step up to fill the offensive void?
  9. Nepean Raiders (7-12-0) | LW: 7 (-2) | Results: 4-2L v COR, 4-2L @ PEM, 4-1L v CP | The Raiders’ offence is once again struggling, as Darcy Findlay’s team managed just five goals in three Week-9 games. Nepean’s winless week has sent it sliding right back out of the playoff picture. One small silver lining: Co-captain Corey Tam played his 200th game this week.
  10. Navan Grads (6-14-0) | LW: 10 (–) | Results: 6-2L @ CP, 2-1W v ROC | Navan was once again outclassed by Carleton Place, but bounced back with a strong home effort to beat Rockland. It’s high time to abandon the notion that Keenan Reynolds is a fluke — the guy’s third in league scoring (14 goals) and producing on an offensively-starved Grads team.
  11. Kemptville 73’s (5-16-1) | LW: 12 (+1) | Results: 5-4SOW @ SF, 5-4W v BRO | The 73’s had their best week of the season, reversing a three-goal third-period deficit to win in Smiths Falls and earning a character win against Brockville on Sunday. Is this the start of something bigger for Jeff Jordan’s team?
  12. Smiths Falls Bears (6-13-2) | LW: 11 (-1) | Results: 5-4SOL v KEM, 5-0L @ OJS | It’s hard to wrap one’s head around how bad Smiths Falls has been in the month of October; the Bears have lost nine in a row, and blew a three-goal lead on home ice against the last-place 73’s. Mark Grady’s team went 1-8-2 in October, and it’s hard to match this group with the one that began the season 4-4.
