Sunday Recap: Canadians cruising, Bears snap streak

Nov. 5, 2017

Smiths Falls 3, Rockland 1

The Smiths Falls Bears snapped a month-long, 10-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the injury-ravaged Rockland Nationals.

Michael Larose’s goal at 5:51 of the third period proved to be the winner for the Bears (7-13-3), who handed the sliding Nationals (11-12-2) their seventh-straight loss.

Cameron Scrivens opened the scoring for the hosts, but three unanswered goals from the Bears via Marc Shannon, Larose and Hayden Hart (EN) sealed the result.

Hawkesbury 5, Nepean 3

The Hawkesbury Hawks continued their good form on Sunday, grinding out a 5-3 win over an uninspired Nepean Raiders team for their 14th win of the campaign.

The third-place Hawks (14-6-0) were led by a pair of three-point performances from veterans Chris Smith (2G, 1A) and David Jankowski (3A); Nepean (9-13-0) forward Kari Belec continued his hot weekend with a pair of goals in the loss.

Tyler Boivin (1G, 2A) also had a three-point day for the surging Hawks.

Nepean is now the league’s worst home team at 3-8.

Cornwall 4, Navan 3

A trio of power-play goals helped the Cornwall Colts to a 4-3 road win in Navan on Sunday afternoon.

Ian MacInnis’s Colts (12-10-2) reversed 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 deficits to take the win against the Grads (7-16-0),

Keegan Mulhearn scored the winner — while on the man advantage — with six minutes left in the third period.

Carleton Place 7, Kemptville 1

The Carleton Place Canadians remained perfect at home in 2017-18 with a 7-1 drubbing of the last-place Kemptville 73’s on Sunday afternoon.

Five players had multi-point games for Jason Clarke’s Canadians (23-2-1, CJHL #4), which outshot Kemptville (5-18-1) an eye-popping 40-13 en route to the confident win.

Carleton Place’s winning streak now stands at 14.

Haydn Hopkins (1G, 2A) and Brett Thorne (3A) paced all scorers in the win for the Canadians.

Brockville 6, Pembroke 2

Jesse Winchester’s Brockville Braves earned a confident 6-2 win over the hometown Pembroke Lumber Kings in Sunday’s Week-10 finale.

Blueliner Jonathan Hill had a pair of goals and an assist to lead the way for Brockville (14-11-1), which nearly let a 3-0 lead slip before a quick double from Jordi Jefferson and Hill sent them into the second intermission with a 5-2 lead.

Alex Horawski took the loss in net for Pembroke (13-9-0), surrendering six goals on 35 shots. Justin Evenson stopped 33 of 35 en route to his 11th win of the season.
