Release | Canadians Elliott McDermott named 2019-20 Arthur K Nielsen Award recipient

Ottawa, ON – The Central Canada Hockey League is pleased to announce that Carleton Place Canadians defenseman Elliott McDermott has been named the 2019-20 Arthur K Nielsen Award recipient as Academic Player of the Year.

The 1999 born Kingston, ON native and Colgate University commit is currently enrolled at Algonquin College where he is taking Business Administration. He currently holds a 4.0 GPA, with marks of 98.5% in Communications, 97% in Business Mathematics, 91.7% in Microeconomics, and 96% in Skills for Academic and Business Success.

On the ice, McDermott is Captain of his team, and finished second among league defensemen with 59 points (16G, 43A) in 62 games of action.

Off the ice, McDermott is an active volunteer in his community. “Each Thursday evening, I volunteer to help coach power skating for young hockey players in Carleton Place,” said McDermott. “Additionally, for the first half of our season, we joined a local elementary school once a week during recess to run laps with their students as a healthy lifestyle initiative. We have also visited other elementary schools in the area to give away free tickets to our games and get the students excited about hockey.”

“As the leader of the team, I have been responsible for helping organize/coordinate these events and make sure they go smoothly. Lastly, our team has participated in a variety of events throughout the season to demonstrate our support for the community. For example, we cheered on runners at the Brett Pearson Run for Your Life (an event to bring awareness to suicide and mental health) and made Quilts of Valour for local Canadian Armed Forces Veterans.”

McDermott joins Geoff Kitt, Owen Grant, and Theo Hannah to the list of Carleton Place Canadians players to win the Arthur K Nielsen Award.
