Pembroke downs Cornwall in overtime, 5-4 (OT)

 

The Pembroke Lumber Kings pulled out a 5-4 (OT) overtime victory over the Cornwall Colts on a clutch goal by Derek Varrin.

 

Although Pembroke was up by as many as two goals in the second period, Cornwall kept the game interesting by staging a comeback that ultimately fell short. The Colts pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by Tanner Spink at 3:13 in the third period.

The Lumber Kings were paced by Varrin, who racked up one goal. Varrin scored 2:05 into overtime to make the score 5-4 Pembroke. Adam Beveridge picked up the assist.

Pembroke excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances.

Pembroke additionally got points from Alex Gilmour, who also registered one goal and one assist. Others who scored for Pembroke included Brandon Zullo, Nicolas Vlahos, and Patrick Kyte, who scored one goal each. In addition, Pembroke received assists from Chris Minns, Tyler ONeill, and Brett Horn, who each chipped in one and Johnny Kyte and Ben VanOoteghem, who contributed two each.

The Lumber Kings were unable to stop Cornwall from sending pucks towards the net, and the Colts eventually piled up 52 shots on goal.

Cornwall was helped by Dean Derouchie, who grabbed two goals. Derouchie scored the first of his two goals at 7:09 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Cornwall. Lawson MacDougall assisted on the tally. Derouchie's next tally made the score 4-4 with 1:39 left in the third period. Matthew Morin provided the assist. Cornwall also got points from Spink, who also tallied one goal and one assist. Cornwall also got a goal from Sebastian Dirven as well. More assists for Cornwall came via Ross Craig, Tristan Conrad, and Jeremy McFarlane, who each chipped in one.

Boyd Diclemente recorded 48 saves for Pembroke. The Lumber Kings totaled 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major and went 1-for-2 on the power play. Pembroke ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Colton Keuhl was ejected from the game. Brett Nichol rejected 22 shots on goal for the Colts. Cornwall ended with nine minutes in penalty time with two minors and one major. For the Colts, Shawn Baird was ejected from the game.
