Gloucester beats Kanata 2-1 after comeback scare

 

The Kanata Lasers tried to dig themselves out of a two-goal hole, but the Gloucester Rangers held on for a 2-1 victory.

Gloucester took a 2-0 lead during the second period, only to have Kanata storm back on a Nicholas Graveline goal 16:51 into the third period to pull to one goal down.

 

The Rangers were led by goalie Doug Johnston, who finished with 28 saves while allowing one goal. Johnston managed to improve on his goals against average, which stood at 3.0 prior to the game.

Gloucester was sparked by Declan Mestel, who grabbed one goal. Mestel scored 13:14 into the second period to make the score 2-0 Gloucester. Jared Leslie picked up the assist.

The Rangers excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances.

Gloucester also got a goal from Jaren Burke as well. More assists for Gloucester came via Paul Vella, who had one and Vincent Guimond, who had two.

The Lasers' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Gloucester power plays. Kanata could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Lasers average 3.2 goals per game. Kanata could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 14 minutes in penalties during the game.

In addition, Kanata received assists from Dean Hewines and David Silye, who contributed one each.

Gloucester incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Brian Wilson made 21 saves for the Lasers on 23 shots.
