CJHL Playoff Spotlight: The CCHL

CALGARY, Alta. – As one of the 10 members of the Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Central Canada Hockey League will commence their postseason Wednesday evening as playoff action gets underway in the Ottawa area.

Here’s a look at the most recent CJHL Playoff Spotlight, which features the CCHL.

The top eight clubs in the CCHL are set to begin their quest for the Bogart Cup.

As four-time defending champions, the No. 1 team in the CCHL standings again this season, the Carleton Place Canadians, will attempt a Drive for Five as they look to match the impressive five-year run the Pembroke Lumber Kings had when they captured five consecutive league titles from 2007 through 2011.

SEASON: For a fifth straight year, Carleton Place finished first overall in the 12-team CCHL standings.

This includes back-to-back 100-plus point campaigns.

TOP SCORERS: CCHL Most Valuable Player David Jankowski of the Hawkesbury Hawks led the league in offensive production in 2017-18.

His 90 points topped all skaters in the CCHL. The St. Lawrence University (ECAC) NCAA D-I commitment notched a league-high 38 goals to go along with 52 assists.

The Canadians’ Samuel Knoblauch was next with 87 points. He is off to UMass-Lowell (Hockey East) once his Jr. A career is complete.

Matthew Barnaby of the Pembroke Lumber Kings was third with 76 points. He has committed to Lake Superior State of the WCHA.

TOP GOALKEEPER: Jeremie Forget had a great year for Carleton Place leading the league in wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts.

The Princeton University (ECAC) commit picked up 35 victories while posting a stingy 1.48 GAA, a .936 save mark along with seven shutouts.

PLAYOFFS: Here’s a glance at each of the four CCHL quarter-final match-ups.

No. 1 Carleton Place vs. No. 8 Rockland:
On paper, the Canadians will be a prohibitive favourite in this series having finished 48 points clear of the Nationals in the standings. … Along with the stellar netminder of Forget and teammate Michael Leach, Carleton Place boasted four skaters among the Top 10 scorers, including Knoblauch, Travis Broughman, Top Defenceman award winner Tim Theocharidis and Geoff Kitt. … Mathieu Blanchette led Rockland with 51 points, including 27 goals.

No. 2 Ottawa vs. No. 7 Pembroke: The Jr. A Senators claimed the CCHL’s Yzerman Division crown with a solid 99-point campaign that featured 46 victories. … Chiwetin Blacksmith, who led Ottawa offensively with 67 points, was third in the CCHL in assists with 51. … Barnaby’s 76 points led Pembroke. … Connor Hicks and Francis Boisvert split the netminding duties for the Jr. A Sens finishing with averages of 1.92 and 2.00. … Lumberkings’ netminder Jake Smith played 48 games and had 25 wins.

No. 3 Brockville vs. No. 6 Kanata: Division rival Brockville ended up nine points ahead of Kanata in what should be a good series. … Jonathan Hill paced the Braves in scoring with 53 points followed by Tyson Kirkby (50) and Eric Holland (49). … Leading the Lasers offensively were the trio of Luca Nocita, Jack Quinn and Bennett Stockdale who produced nearly 150 points between them. … Justin Evenson was 27-9-2 for the Braves in goal while rookie Gabriel Carriere was 21-7-3 for Kanata.

No. 4 Hawkesbury vs. No. 5 Cornwall: Only three points separated the two sides in the standings with both clubs boasting 30-plus wins on the year. … CCHL MVP David Janowski’s 90 points led all players in the league in 2017-18. … Chris Smith chipped in with 25 tallies and 52 points for the Hawks. … Cornwall’s top point guy was Konnor MacCormick with a team-best 49 points, followed by Cameron West’s 43 and J.D. Pogue’s 42. … Matthew Petizian and Peter Brooks saw plenty of action in net for Hawkesbury picking up 37 wins in total. … Liam Lascelle went 27-17-3 for the Colts with a 2.72 GAA, a .927 SV% and four shutouts.

FRED PAGE CUP: The Ottawa Jr. A Senators will serve as host for the Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian Jr. A Championship, May 2-6.

Joining the Jr. A Senators at the four-team event will be the either the CCHL winner, or finalist, if Ottawa prevails, along with the respective champions of the Maritime Hockey League and the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League.
