Alumni Spotlight | NCAA CCHA/Big Ten/NCHC/Independents

OTTAWA, ON – A total of fifteen Central Canada Hockey League alumni were active through out the NCAA Central Collegiate Hockey Association, Big Ten Conference, National Collegiate Hockey Conference, and Division 1 Independents during the 2022-23 season. Below we recap the past seasons for Ryland Mosley, Luke Grainger, Brett Thorne, Liam Souliere, Simon Mack, and David Gagnon.

 

RYLAND MOSLEY (CARLETON PLACE) – MICHIGAN TECH UNIVERSITY

The Arnprior, ON native set career highs as a Junior in 2022-23, leading the Huskies in scoring to help the team to a 13th overall ranking in the nation. For his efforts, Mosley was named to the All-CCHA First-Team while also earning a place on the CCHA All-Academic Team. The Marketing Major also earned the Gary Crosby Award as the leading scorer for the Huskies. After finding a new gear in his Junior season, Mosley will look to continue building his overall game as a Senior as him and the rest of the Huskies look to continue their dominance. 

 

LUKE GRAINGER (HAWKESBURY HAWKS) – WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

The Montreal, QC native and former CCHL Graduating Player of the Year had a coming out party in his Junior season in 2022-23, setting career highs in every offensive statistical category as he finished fourth on his club in scoring as he helped the Broncos to a 9th place ranking in the country. At the conclusion of the season, Grainger was named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar Athlete and earned the teams KOHA Grinder Award. Heading into his Senior campaign, Grainger will be leaned on even more heavily and is projected to have another strong season. 

 

BRETT THORNE (CARLETON PLACE) – MICHIGAN TECH UNIVERSITY

The Bedford, NS native put together another strong season with the Huskies in 2022-23, setting career highs in Points (18) and Assists (15) in 34 games of action. Wearing the “C”, Thorne was leaned on both on and off the ice for his leadership qualities. He was named CCHA Defenseman of the Month for November and earned Defenseman of the Week honours on three occasions. At season’s end, Thorne was named to the All-CCHA Second Team, CCHA All-Academic Team, while also being named one of four Scholar Athletes in the Conference. Michigan Tech awarded Thorne with the Gitzen-Loutit Memorial Award as their most outstanding defensive player. 

 

LIAM SOULIERE (BROCKVILLE/NEPEAN) – PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Brampton, ON native put forth his best season of college hockey yet in 2022-23, where he started 36 games for the Nittany Lions and picked up 19 wins. He would be named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as National Player of the Year while also being named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List for Goaltender of the Year. The former CCHL Goaltender of the Year should take another big step forward in his progression as he heads into his Senior season in 2023-24.

 

 

 

SIMON MACK (BROCKVILLE) – PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Brockville, ON native finished 2nd on Penn State among defensemen in Goals (4) and third in Points (12) in 36 games of action. Majoring in Pre-Med, Mack brought a consistent two-way presence from the back-end and was counted on in big moments of games. The former CCHL High School Academic Player of the Year and Top Prospect will look to take another big leap in his development as he heads into his Junior campaign with the Nittany Lions.

 

DAVID GAGNON (CARLETON PLACE) – LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY

The Halifax, NS native and Carleton Place Canadians alumni was an absolute stud for Lindenwood University in 2022-23 (the University’s first season of Division 1 play), finishing tops on the team in Goals (13) and Points (30) in 30 games of action. A former CCHL All-Star, Gagnon has really found a new gear in the collegiate ranks, becoming a go-to player when his team needs offensive production. Heading into his third year, another big jump in production is expected.
