Nichol stymies Ottawa, Cornwall wins 2-1

 

A stellar performance between the pipes by Brett Nichol helped the Cornwall Colts defeat the Ottawa Senators, 2-1.

 

Cornwall's penalty kill excelled, as the Colts gave up one goal despite allowing six power plays.

Cornwall was paced by Grant Cooper, who had one goal. Cooper scored 14:01 into the third period to make the score 2-1 Cornwall. Sebastian Dirven provided the assist.

The Colts' offense rang up 36 shots on Ottawa's net. Cornwall could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 17 minutes in penalties during the game.

Cornwall also got a goal from Brennan Markell as well.

The Senators forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up seven minors and one major for 19 minutes in penalty time. Ottawa surpassed its season average of 13.0 penalty minutes per game. The Senators' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Cornwall power plays. Ottawa could not produce up to its normal offensive output. The Senators put an average of 3.5 pucks into the net per game. Ottawa kept the Colts' goalie busy throughout the game, and Nichol made 30 saves on 31 shots.

The Senators were led by Geoffrey Lawson, who scored the team's only goal. Lawson scored on the power play 18:37 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Ottawa had taken the advantage when Cornwall's Matthew Morin got sent off for holding. Jaren Burke picked up the assist.

For the Colts, Eric Verville was ejected from the game. Marcus Paulino rejected 34 shots on goal for the Senators. Ottawa ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Jody Sullivan was ejected from the game.
