In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Hawkesbury Hawks escaped with a 5-3 victory over the Kanata Lasers.
Neither team gained more than a two-goal lead, and Jonathan Cyr‘s goal in the second period proved to be the difference maker.
Cyr had two goals and one assist to lead Hawkesbury. Cyr scored the first of his two goals at 11:11 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Hawkesbury. Damien Charette provided the assist. Cyr’s next tally made the score 3-2 Hawkesbury with 11:51 left in the second period. The Hawks earned a power play opportunity when Louis-Charles Croteau was put in the box for boarding. Julien Denicourt picked up the assist.
Kanata’s power play was ineffective against Hawkesbury’s penalty kill, which allowed one goal while shorthanded.
The Hawks’ offense rang up 38 shots on the Lasers’ net.
Others who scored for Hawkesbury included Adriano Leone, Chandler Watson, and Joe Smith, who scored one goal each. In addition, Hawkesbury received assists from Charles Levesque, Matt Kashan, and Jonathan Tecce, who each chipped in one.
Kanata kept Hawkesbury’s goalie busy throughout the game, and Jesse Michel made 38 saves on 41 shots.
The Lasers were helped by Jacob Balca, who had one goal. Balca scored 17:35 into the first period to make the score 1-1. Kanata also had goals scored by Dean Hewines and Bennett Altman, who each put in one. More assists for Kanata came via Bryce Biller, Ian Johnston, and Joseph Keenan, who contributed one each.
The Hawks incurred 14 minutes in penalty time with seven minors. Brian Wilson recorded 33 saves for Kanata. The Lasers incurred eight minutes in penalty time with four minors.
