Day 2 Blog | Junior Club Sirius World Cup | CCHL falls 5-1 to Krylya Sovetov

Moscow, RU – The team got to sleep in a little later today with there being no morning skate but woke up refreshed and roaring to go for for Day 2 in Moscow.  After a team breakfast at the hotel, the players and staff boarded their bus and headed out to the Soviet Wings Sports Palace for their first game of the trip, an Exhibition Game Vs MHC Krylya Sovetov.

It was tough sledding for the Ottawa Capitals on Tuesday afternoon as they fell 5-1 to MHC Krylya Sovetov, who exploded for five-straight goals in the third period to top the CCHL Selects.

Ottawa led 1-0 after the first period, getting a late period tally from Zachary Tupker (Carleton Place Canadians) who finished off an Ashton Fry (Kemptville 73’s) feed.  After a scoreless second period, which turned out to be the Capitals best one of the game, the wheels would ultimately fall off in the final frame as the Russian’s came out flying, scoring quickly and often. 

In nets for Ottawa, Liam Souliere (Brockville Braves) finished with 17 stops, while Gabriel Carriere (Kanata Lasers) stopped 15 shots. 

“I thought the first period we were tentative and slow to react,” said Head Coach Mark Grady. “As the game went on we seemed to gain more confidence and get our feet under us. The third period we made some very uncharacteristic mistakes for the quality of players I’ve seen these young men be with their CCHL clubs. We got back on our heels and paid the price for it. Lots of teaching points come out of a game like this and it’s a process to prepare a group that has never played together for such a high calibre tournament. Although not happy with the way we lost, the staff is confident there will be progression every time we step on the ice going forward.”
