The Central Canada Hockey League and Cornwall Colts are pleased to announce that ’98 born defenseman Sebastian Dirven has committed to NCAA Cornell University for 2018-19.

The 6’3”,190 pound defenceman was all smiles as he took to the ice for practice Tuesday afternoon as the Colts prepare for game 1 of their CCHL semi-final series against Ottawa Thursday night.

“Cornell has a good mix of top ranked academics and a really good hockey program,” said Dirven, from Bainsville.  “Academically, I’ll be focusing on the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.  It’s one of the best in North America.”

Dirven, named as a 3rd Team CCHL All Star had career highs in goals, assists and points this past season (9-17-26 in 57 games).  He had a goal and 4 assists in the Colts’ five game series victory over Smiths Falls in round one of the CCHL playoffs.

Dirven suited up for Team Canada East this past December for the World Jr.A Challenge.

The Big Red competes in the ECAC hockey conference and they are 21- time Ivy League Champions (the most recent being in 2014).  Notable alumni from the Cornell Big Red include Hockey Hall of Fame members Ken Dryden and Joe Nieuwendyk.

Former Cornwall Colts star forward Sean Flannigan (2004-2006) is an assistant coach with the Big Red.

The Colts kick off their CCHL semi-final series against Ottawa this Thursday at the Ed Lumley Arena.  Game time is 7:30pm.
