Smiths Falls uses shootout to best Cornwall, 5-4 (2-1 SO)

 

Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Smiths Falls Bears defeated the Cornwall Colts in a shootout 5-4 (2-1 SO).

The shootout lasted for six attempts between the teams. Cornwall got a shootout goal from Lawson MacDonald. Smiths Falls also got a shootout goal from Karson McCartney.

 

The Bears saw a three-goal lead disappear, but was able to secure the win in a shootout. Smiths Falls made the score 3-0 on a goal by McCartney at 19:19 in the second period. The Colts evened things up at 4-4 on a goal by Nick Lalonde at 16:05 in the third period.

Kevin Groulx had a great game for the Bears, netting two goals. Groulx found the back of the net 18:06 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Smiths Falls and again while 3:18 into the third to make the score 4-2 Smiths Falls.

Smiths Falls put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Cornwall to score on any of its three power plays. The Bears' offense rang up 37 shots on the Colts' net.

Craig Cross also scored for Smiths Falls. Other players who recorded assists for Smiths Falls were Nathan Foster, Brett Garvey, Josh Leblanc, Noah Gurr, Cole Busschaert, and Michael McKenney, who each chipped in one.

Cornwall avoided man-down situations well, tallying one major for five minutes in penalty time. The Colts finished below its season average of 16.0 penalty minutes per game. Cornwall kept Smiths Falls' goalie busy throughout the game, and Michael Pinios made 33 saves on 37 shots.

Cornwall also got points from Grant Cooper, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Cornwall also had goals scored by MacDonald and Jay DAmour, who scored one goal each. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Tristen Elie and Peter Angelopoulos, who contributed one each and Tanner Spink and Simon Besner, who each chipped in two.

The Bears incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. Brett Nichol made 32 saves for the Colts on 36 shots. For Cornwall, Juan-Diego Hernandez was ejected from the game.
