In Remembrance – Neil “Q” McHugh 1958-2023

Ottawa, ON – The Central Canada Hockey League is saddened to learn of the passing of long-time Brockville Braves Broadcaster Neil “Q” McHugh who passed away peacefully on October 12, 2023.

Neil was the consummate volunteer, who’s area of expertise just happened to be play-by-play, as well as interviewing and colour analysis of hockey games. With well over 500 CCHL games worked in his unique style, Neil was a staple across CCHL airwaves. He was famous for his pre-game interviews with coaches and players from both the Braves and their opponents. In 2018, Neil was named the Chris Messina Broadcasting Award recipient as CCHL Broadcaster of the Year.

Neil was more than just a broadcaster, he was a storyteller, painting vivid pictures with his words, allowing fans to experience the game even if they couldn’t be at the rink. His dedication to his craft and unwavering support towards both the Brockville Braves and CCHL endeared him to players, coaches, and fellow broadcasters alike.

But it wasn’t just his professionalism that made him a legend, it was his kindness and approachability. He would chat with fans, offer advice to aspiring broadcasters, and make everyone feel like they were part of the Braves family.

Neil “Q” McHugh may have left this world, but his legacy lives on in the memories of those who had the privilege of hearing his broadcasts. He will forever be missed by the hockey community, a true friend and voice of the game.
