CCHL Announces Chris Messina Broadcasting Award

Ottawa, Ont. —

The Central Canada Hockey League is proud to announce the creation of the Chris Messina Broadcasting Award.

The annual recognition will be presented to one league broadcaster who exemplifies the professionalism and dedication shown by Chris Messina during his work as the league’s director of communications and broadcasting. Messina passed away on August 14, 2017 at the age of 32.

“This award is an opportunity for us to remember and celebrate the impact Chris had on the league,” said CCHL communications manager Carlos Verde. “The outpouring of support that we’ve seen is a testament to the kind of broadcaster and person he was.”

Messina’s work and infectious enthusiasm had a positive impact on countless people within the CCHL community.

“I will always be indebted to Chris for setting me up with my first CCHL broadcasting job in 2011,” reflected Michael Nellis, a long-time league broadcaster with the Gloucester Rangers and Ottawa Jr. Senators. “He was a fantastic resource and, more importantly, a friend to many in local sports — he provided me with invaluable knowledge on the industry and always made himself available for advice and mentorship.”

The award will be presented to the recognized broadcaster at their team’s final regular-season home game.
