Alumni Spotlight: NCAA Big 10/NCHC/Independents

 

A total of six Central Canada Hockey League alumni participated in Big 10, NCHC, and Independent NCAA Conference programs during the 2019-20 season.

Notable alumni included former Brockville Braves sniper Liam Folkes and former CCHL Prospect of the Year Andrew Peski, Kanata Lasers defenseman Kris Myllari, and former Smiths Falls Bears back-stopper Evan Debrouwer.

Heading into 2020-21,  Simon Mack (Brockville), is slated to head to Penn State University, Luke Grainger (Hawkesbury) and Alex Aslanidis (Navan) are committed to join Western Michigan University, while Madoka Suzuki (Kemptville) will join the newest Division 1 program at Long Island University. 

 

LIAM FOLKES | PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Scarborough, ON native and Brockville Braves alum wrapped up his Senior campaign in 2019-20, bringing a tremendous collegiate career to an end at Penn State. The speedy winger finished his career tied for seventh on the Penn State all-time scoring list with 103 points, while his 48 career goals ranked fifth on the all-time goals list at the time of his graduation. He was named an Academic All-Big 10 honoree this past season as well as earning the Penn State Hockey Culture Award. It was announced on March 24th that Folkes had signed a two-year entry level professional contract with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League.

 

ANDREW PESKI | NORTH DAKOTA UNIVERSITY

The Orleans, ON native wrapped up his college career this past season where he registered a career high in points (10), on 1 goal and 9 assists. The Marketing Major finished with a +/1 rating of +17 while logging big minutes in a shutdown role for the Fighting Hawks. The former Brockville Braves star defenseman who was the CCHL’s Top Prospect in 2014-15 finished his college career with 21 points (4G, 17A) over the course of 125 games. Although nothing has yet to be confirmed, it is expected that Peski will join the professional ranks this coming season.

 

KRIS MYLLARI | PENN STATE UNIVERSITY

The Kanata, ON native and Management Major wrapped up his Senior season in 2019-20, where he totaled 10 points (2G, 8A) in 34 games of action. He graduated as the all-time leader at Penn State for Goals among defensemen with 19 and Blocked Shots with a whopping 320. Off the ice, Myllari was named an Academic All-Big 10 honoree. The anticipation is that he will continue his hockey career at the professional level.

 

EVAN DEBROUWER | ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY

The Blenheim, ON native started all but four games for the Sun Devils in 2019-20, finishing 19-11-3 with a 2.52 GAA and .919 SV%. He Finished with four shutouts on the season, and upset victories over No. 4 Denver, No. 8 Clarkson and a sweep of No. 9 Quinnipiac. With two more seasons of college eligibility, the Smiths Falls Bears alumni has the tools to help #13 ranked Arizona State climb the national rankings and compete for a national title.
