Alumni College Spotlight | Big 10 Conference

by Sean Marcellus @snmarcellus / Central Canada Hockey League

The NCAA Big 10 Conference was home to four Central Canada Hockey League alumni during the 2017-18 season, all of which were part of a very successful Penn State University Hockey program.

F – Andrew Sturtz (JR) – Penn State University

The Carleton Place Canadians alumni and former CCHL League MVP finished up his Junior season at Penn State where he totaled 40 points (14G, 26A) in 37 games. Sturtz was named an All-Conference 3rd-Team All-Star at seasons end. He then went on and signed a two-year entry level contract with the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and suited up in 6 games with their AHL affiliate in Belleville, notching 3 points (1G, 2A).

F – Liam Folkes (SO) – Penn State University

The former Brockville Braves star continues to progress each season with the Nittany Lions. After a 13-point (6G, 7A) Freshman campaign, Folkes tallied 13 goals and totaled 23 points in 38 games this past season, good enough for fifth in team scoring.

F – Brett Murray (SO) – Penn State University

The hulking power-forward and Buffalo Sabres prospect has been used mostly in a defensive role through out his first season and a half at Penn State, while also being switched to the Center position from his common position as a winger. The Carleton Place Canadians alumni continues to learn the college game and make the adjustments necessary within his development curve. He will be looked upon to take on a bigger role as a Junior next season.

D – Kris Myllari (SO) – Penn State University

The Kanata Stallions (now Lasers) alumni had another strong season with Penn State, finishing 3rd in Points among team defenders (14), and 2nd in Goals (5) while playing in all situations regularly. Moving into his Junior campaign, the 6-2, 190 lb Kanata, ON native will be leaned on more.
