KANATA ON –
Twelve teams, 36 games and 97 goals later the 2018 Fall Showcase is officially a wrap. Three teams (Hawkesbury, Kemptville and Carleton Place) secured the maximum six points available and leap into the season brimming with confidence. Top ten worthy goals were a plenty throughout the long weekend as the Bell Sensplex was buzzing with activity. Hundreds of scouts from various levels of collegiate and pro hockey were in attendance surveying potential recruits and building early relationships. The annual CCHL Fall Showcase brings with it an almost playoff like atmosphere as players and coaches are energized and anxious to come out the gates flying.
Day 1- Saturday Septmber 1st
Kanata 2 Hawkesbury 5
Lasers weren’t able to solve Hawkesbury on six powerplay chances while the Hawks converted on 2 of 8 opportunities. Five different goal scorers provided the offence and D Jaxon Camp had two helpers. Kanata goaltender Gabriel Carriere was busy in his opener stopping 29 of 33 shots.
Pembroke 3 Cornwall 1
Ithica New York’s Matteas Derraugh was the only goal scorer through the first two periods potting one 5:35 into the frame. Pembroke had book end goals in between Benjamin Dervin’s 3rd period marker and the Lumber Kings started their campaign victorious.
Carleton Place Canadians 3 Ottawa Jr. Senators 1
In potentially the most intriguing match up throughout the 2018 Fall Showcase the Canadians defeated OJS and get the first win in what is always a highly competitive season series. CCHL veteran Darcy Walsh opened the scoring 7:37 into the 2nd followed by three unanswered Carleton Place goals including an empty netter from Reece Boulton to secure the victory.
Smith’s Falls Bears 3 Nepean Raiders 2
On the strength of two Ryan Richardson goals and a quality start from G Bradley Dobson allowed the Bears to sneak by Nepean in their opener. Off-season acquisition G Logan Bateman got the nod in the Raider goal stopping 25 of 28 Bear shots. Silas Mattawashish buried on the powerplay and combined with Jackson Clark’s late 3rd period goal weren’t enough to get by Smith’s Falls.
Kemptville 73’s 4 Rockland Nationals 3
Jacob Thousand converted twice while Jeff Taylor added two assists and Kemptville backed up their successful pre-season starting 2018 with a win. The see-saw affair saw the teams exchange goals until Thousand’s 2nd 12:28 into the 3rd ended up being the game winner.
Brockville Braves 3 Navan Grads 1
In a game that included a lengthy delay due to broken glass, Navan were unable to claw their way back from a three goal deficit the Braves built up after two periods. Eric Faith made it 3-0 short handed while the Grads Zack Hoffman scored their only goal on the man advantage.
Day 2 – Sunday September 2nd
Kanata Lasers 5 Cornwall Colts 3
Being slotted in the early game back to back days didn’t phase Kanata. First year CCHL forward Nicolas Case sniped a pair including one on Kanata’s only powerplay of the game. Colt’s Goalie Rico Dimatteo had his hands full facing 38 shots and Cornwall went 1 for 5 on the powerplay.
Hawkesbury Hawks 2 Pembroke Lumber Kings 0
El perfecto from Hawks starter Matthew Petezian as he stopped all 32 Lumber King shots. Hawkesbury’s Nicolas Elia and Alex Taillon provided all the offence the Hawks would need to kick off the year 2-0. Pembroke was 0/4 on the PP and got a solid start from G Jake Smith making 29 saves.
Nepean Raiders 1 Carleton Place Canadians 6
CPC forward Brett Thorne steered the ship offensively scoring twice and adding an assist to help vault Jason Clarke’s Canadians to a resounding 6-1 win. Carleton Place was a highly efficient 3 for 7 on the PP while the Raiders couldn’t generate any offence on their three chances with a man up.
Ottawa Jr. Sens 4 Smith’s Falls Bears 5
Despite pouring 36 shots on Bears goalie Ryan Jack and scoring four times OJS fell short to Smith’s Falls in what was arguably the most action-packed, exciting game of the showcase. Joey Warywoda stole the show with a goal and three apples to complete a 4 point afternoon. Ottawa went 0/2 on the PP while the Bears were able to convert once in four chances.
Kemptville 73’s 3 Navan Grads 1
Erie Pennsylvania’s and 73’s G Jarrett Fiske had a successful CCHL debut making 24 saves. Ryan Pawlikowski notched his first two goals on the season. Navan assistant captain Alexendre Way tallied the only Grads goal while securing third star honors.
Rockland Nationals 4 Brockville Braves 1
Brockville’s Mathieu Halle scored the Braves only goal 7:49 into the opening period and then the Nationals reeled off four unanswered to snag their 1st win of 2018. Rockland looked exceptional in the pre season and beat a Brockville team that many expect to remain highly competitive. Nats G Cyrus Martin was rock solid making 26 saves.
Day 3 – Monday September 3rd
Hawkesbury Hawks 5 Smith’s Falls Bears 2
The Hawks are flying as one flock and go undefeated at the 2018 Fall Showcase. Smothering team defence stymied the Bears alongside an impressive offensive showing from Jeremie Lavallee with two goals. The Bears were able to make a game of it in the 3rd after being down 4-0 cutting that lead in half before Hawkesbury put it out of reach with under four minutes remaining.
Carleton Place Canadians 6 Cornwall Colts 1
CP found the back of the net a league high 15 times in their three games including back to back 6-1 wins. Zachary Tupker had a 3 point afternoon (2G, 1A) and G Connor Murphy was a fortress stopping 31 of 32. Connor Amsley scored for Cornwall as they needed to generate more on the powerplay going 0/5.
Pembroke Lumber Kings 4 Rockland Nationals 2
Lumber Kings escaped the weekend with 4 of 6 points in the bank. The Nationals Jean-Sylvain Boyer netted a late 2nd period goal to make it 3-2. Renfrew Onatrio native Jacob Collins found a yawning cage with 12 seconds to spare which sealed the win for Pembroke.
Kanata Lasers 1 Navan Grads 0 (SO)
In the only game of the showcase to make it past regulation the Lasers and Grads were virtually dead even statistically through the first 60 minutes. Navan came within mere milometers from ending things during 3 on 3 overtime. Instead consecutive shootout goals from the Lasers Nicolas Case and Alex Gagnon confirmed a debut shutout from G JP Tourigny.
Brockville Braves 3 Ottawa Jr. Senators 1
Following an appearance at last years RBC Cup no one expected OJS to go winless at the showcase. An all around effort and superior penatly killing from Brockville allowed them to win 2 of 3 games at the 2018 Fall Showcase. Brockville’s Simon Mack helped out with 1G, 1A.
Kemptville 73’s 4 Nepean Raiders 2
The final game of the 2018 Fall Showcase featured an explosion of offense to start the 2nd from the 73’s. They entered the 2nd down 1-0 on an Alexander Bourhas Raider goal but were able to solve Olivier Pimpare-Charbonneau three times in a minute and two seconds. Kemptville’s Joseph Samson had 2 goals while John Beaton had a big time 4 assist game. Nepean will be back in action this Saturday when they visit OJS.
