Cornwall squeaks by Hawkesbury, 5-3

The Cornwall Colts and the Hawkesbury Hawks were evenly matched throughout their contest, but Cornwall made the most of its opportunities and won, 5-3.

Each team kept the other at bay throughout the game, and Dean Derouchie secured the win for the Colts with a goal in the third period.

The win by Cornwall clinched the best of seven series at 4-2.

With three goals and two assists between them, Kevin Hope and Zac Tierney teamed up to power the Colts’ offense. Hope grabbed two goals and Tierney also added one goal and two assists.

Cornwall also got points from Derouchie, who also tallied one goal and one assist and Tierney, who also registered one goal and two assists. Jay DAmour also scored for Cornwall. In addition, Cornwall received assists from Ross Craig, Grant Cooper, Tristen Elie, Marly Quince, and Lawson MacDougall, who contributed one each.

Hawkesbury was led by CJ Stubbs, who racked up two goals. Stubbs scored the first of his two goals on the power play at 6:13 into the first period to make the score 1-1. The Hawks had gotten the advantage when Cornwall’s Lawson MacDonald was sent off for interference. Chris Harper provided the assist. Stubbs’ next tally on the power play made the score 2-1 Hawkesbury with 16:00 left in the second period. Reid Murphy picked up the assist. Hawkesbury also got a goal from Rory Gagnon as well. More assists for Hawkesbury came via Domenic Camastra and Hunter Racine, who each chipped in one.

Denny Dubblestyne rejected 26 shots on goal for the Colts. Cornwall incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Gunner Rivers made 24 saves for Hawkesbury on 28 shots. The Hawks incurred 12 minutes in penalty time with six minors. For Hawkesbury, Jason Brochu was ejected from the game.
